Jazz

I grew up with Jazz. My Dad and Uncle ran Victoria’s only jazz record store, Sweet Thunder Records. Together, Shaukat Husain and Demis Tsimon still run B.C.’s longest running Jazz Radio show Straight No Chaser on CFUV 102FM. It’s been on the air over 40 years.

When I was a kid, my brother and I would run around the store’s back office sneaking bites of spare donuts while Kind of Blue was spinning in the background. When the store was quiet, we would flip through iconic Blue Note covers, drawn to the eye catching art of Francis Wollf’s inimitable black and white photography and Reid Mile’s groundbreaking design. Those images and sounds are pressed into my memory, and I remain inspired by my Dad and Uncle, their love for Jazz and the community they built through Sweet Thunder Records.
